Awesome… Amazing… Exhilarating… That’s how winners described the 20th Anniversary Supply Chain Excellence Awards as hundreds of industry professionals got together on Monday night to celebrate all that is best in the industry.

Lucy Porter, host of this year's 20th Anniversary Supply Chain Excellence Awards.

Lucy Porter, host of this year’s 20th Anniversary Supply Chain Excellence Awards.

“Delighted, especially with lots of competition, we’re really proud. And with such a beautiful award…” said Katie O’Leary, CitySprint, on winning the Sourcing & Procurement Award with the BBC.

Argos with Llamasoft won two categories – Supply Chain Strategy and Design and Innovation.

Andy Brown, central operations director at Argos, said: “Having worked with LLamasoft in the past on various projects, we knew they were the right supply chain design technology partner to help us build our own design team and reach our goals. Furthermore we really appreciate this external recognition awarded by a panel of supply chain industry experts. This validates the work of the whole team, who together deserve this accolade.”

Executive director of customer success for Llamasoft EMEA, Phil Gibbs, said:“I am very proud of this achievement. The award is testament to the close working relationship we have with the Argos team. We’re looking forward to continuing to share the value that LLamasoft is providing to Argos and to retailers worldwide.”

Colonel Kirsten Dagless, from the 17 Port& Maritime Regiment RLC (winner of the Logistics and Distribution Award) described the win as “absolutely awesome”.

Vodafone picked up the heavily sought after Technology Award. Reinhard Plaza Bartsch, who is head of SCM supplier management operations said that winning felt “Amazing” and “Brilliant”.

Brett Young, operations director, from Missguided, said achieving the Warehouse Initative Award was “Fantastic”.

And Shilp Janjuha, asset protection specialist, Logistics Management Centre for Thames Water, winner of the Customer Service & Support Awards, said winning was “exhilarating”.

MAN Truck & Bus took the overall winner of the 2016 Supply Chain Excellence Awards with a major strategic initiative that delivered huge benefits in both customer service and inventory performance.

Search is on for the outstanding supply chain of 2017

The search for outstanding supply chains starts now with the launch of the 21st Supply Chain Excellence Awards.

LSCThe Awards, organised by Logistics & Supply Chain, are the gold standard of supply chain achievement and winners include some of Europe’s leading companies.

The winners of the 2017 Awards will be revealed in front of more than 600 industry leaders at London’s Park Lane Hilton on Tuesday, 14th November.

The number of entries has been growing steadily year on year, and last year was no exception, with more than 60 companies making it to the final stage of the awards judging.

What makes the European Supply Chain Excellence Awards special is the stringent process to analyse supply chain performance. Our judging team is made up of senior industry figures who bring years of experience to bear. Shortlisted companies are asked to make presentations to our judges and face detailed questioning from panel members. It’s a uniquely exhaustive process that makes the Awards uniquely worth winning.

Last year MAN Truck & Bus took the Overall Award in a tightly fought contest with Sky, John Lewis, Telefónica, Shell and Sightsavers. Other category winners included: Tesco, the BBC, Europris, and Argos.

HOW DO I ENTER?

All the entry information is on the Awards web site:

www.supplychainexcellenceawards.com

THE ENTRY PROCESS

We ask all participants to register online. Registrants will be sent a registration confirmation email providing a unique reference number. Once registered you will have access to all of the entry forms available for download. These forms are in Word format so that you can complete them in your own time rather than rush them in one online session.

When you’re ready to send us your completed entry forms, simply use the details in your registration confirmation email to access the entry form and submission area online and upload the entry files.

The first stage of judging is the shortlist. We will contact you to let you know if you have made the shortlist before it is announced publicly.

If you make it to the shortlist, you will be asked to make a presentation during a face-to-face session with two of our judges in central London in late September/early October. More information will be provided to all successful finalists who are shortlisted.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO WIN?

There is no doubt that the Supply Chain Excellence Awards are challenging. Entrants are asked to provide us with a lot of information. In some cases where the judges feel they don’t have enough information, they go back and ask for more.

Those entrants that make it through to the shortlist are invited to make a presentation to the judges and answer questions. We have a team of more than 40 judges made up of the team at Logistics & Supply Chain and leading supply chain professionals.

In the process the judges look for five common characteristics of high performing supply chains. These are:

  1. Does the supply chain help to deliver competitive advantage to your company – or is it a cost of doing business?
  2. Are your processes and systems streamlined and integrated across the end-to-end supply chain – or are they complex and fragmented?
  3. Is the supply chain organisation structured and staffed for success – or is it an admin function staffed with the dead weights?
  4. Have you built a collaborative operating model with a clear understanding of your core competencies – or are you a jack of all trades and a master of none?
  5. Have you a clear understanding of how to measure success and is the organisation incentivised to deliver it – or do you measure everything and do nothing with it?

If the entry was for a special category – for example Sourcing and Procurement, or Customer Service there is less emphasis given to the core disciplines and more emphasis to the relative performance and achievement of each of the finalists. In addition, the judges give special attention to the demonstration of innovation and the commitment, passion and enthusiasm of entrants.

Could you be overall winner?

Entries for the upcoming 21st Anniversary of the Supply Chain Excellence awards are now open – do you have what it takes to take home the trophy for overall winner? Last year saw MAN Truck & Bus triumph when it beat off stiff competition for the Automotive, Demand Forecasting & Planning and overall winner category.

LSCMAN Truck & Bus’ entry concerned a bold strategic initiative that was centred on the company’s extensive spare-parts supply chain, and that was to test the very nature of the relationship between the manufacturer and its dealership network. The new way of working would require the highest levels of trust in the manufacturers service parts planning capabilities – in effect, MAN would manage the inventory held within the dealerships. The idea was to reduce the ‘bullwhip effect’ across the spare parts supply chain by gathering big data volumes from all the locations involved and creating a holistic view of inventory needs.

They came up against stiff competition from McLaren with CEVA Logistics, but in the end it was MAN who stole the show.

In its 21st year, the Supply Chain Excellence awards sets a precedent for the industry. Its stringent judging process, where supply chain performance is analysed in detail, makes it a very special and renowned event.

Those who are lucky enough to be shortlisted will make a presentation to our set of judges, as well as face detailed questioning from a panel. It is an exhaustive process that truly makes the awards worth winning.

The event itself will be held at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Tuesday 14th November 2017, where the winners will be revealed at a dazzling ceremony. Expect a delicious three-course meal and networking opportunities.

The shortlist for the 20th Anniversary Supply Chain Excellence Awards has been unveiled – and it highlights the outstanding work that has been done by supply chain professionals over the past year.

Malory Davies FCILT, Editor.

Malory Davies FCILT, Editor.

And all the companies that have made it though to the presentation stage deserve to be congratulated.

There were more than 120 entries for the Awards this year – even more than last year’s record.

Every year, the standard of the entries seems to go up and this year is no exception. There was clear evidence of a determination to implement best practice in all the entries, while innovation was also apparent. So making it to the shortlist is an achievement in itself.

In the next stage of the process, which takes place over a four week period in September and October, companies are invited to make a presentation to a panel of judges made up of senior supply chain professionals.

I’m looking forward to it. In the meantime, I would like to congratulate all the companies that have made it to the shortlist.

Coming of age

$

Tonight the Supply Chain Excellence Awards come of age – this is the 21st Awards.

Malory Davies, Editor.

And the fact that there are a record number of entries on the shortlist this year reflects the importance companies now place on their supply chains.

Tonight’s winners will join a select group, including: major motor manufacturers such as MAN, and Jaguar Land Rover; technology leaders such as Dell and Infineon; and retailers such as Primark and Waterstones. The entries this year include examples of excellence from all these sectors.

The judging process is famously challenging. Entrants must make a presentation to a panel of senior supply chain professionals who can, and do, ask some extremely searching questions.

For the judges, it is always impressive to see the expertise, professionalism and enthusiasm of the entrants. Not only that, the process gives invaluable insights into the day to day challenges facing industry professionals in a rapidly changing business environment.

Awards inevitably have winners and losers, but all the shortlisted companies can be proud of what they have achieved. And tonight will be a massive celebration of all that is best in our industry.

I hope to see you there.

Winners of the prestigious Supply Chain Excellence Awards were overjoyed and honoured to have been recognised by the judges as leaders in their fields and projects.

Severn Trent, winner of the Overall Winner Award, and the Public and Third Sectors trophy described the win as “amazing”, “awesome” and “absolutely incredible”.

“[The win is] absolutely amazing, it’s an honour to be here, let alone winning an award. So we couldn’t thank the judges enough, it’s a great honour.”

“A huge amount of hard work has gone into it, so just really, really proud of what everyone has done. Amazing achievement,” said Chris Wand, Severn Trent.

“ [The key was] teamwork, communication and teamwork, pulling together at times of strain and supporting one another through the difficult periods, that’s what’s made it key and brought us here tonight.”

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with Ingenica Solutions were “blown away” by the Award results when they won the Sourcing and Procurement category: “Absolutely amazing, a lot of hard work gone in from Ian and his team, and supported by more team. And I think it’s just amazing to win. Big team effort,” said Nicola Hall, Ingenica Solutions. “Collaboration between the trust and willingness to change. Just to make savings for the NHS I think is fantastic. Just to have worked with the guys there, great bunch of guys there.”

Euro Car Parts took home the trophy for Automotive. The team were very pleased with their achievement: “Unbelievable really – first time we’ve entered this award, or anything similar. We weren’t sure if we had a decent chance against the competition, but we’re really, really, really pleased to win,” said Ben Baldwin. “It was difficult when we made the submission, we think what we are doing in our business and industry is quite special, but you’re never quite sure. But obviously the panel has recognised what it is we’re doing and see that that is quite cutting edge.”

There was also a great response to the event on social media throughout the night:
